About the Author

About the Author | Legal Insights by Ashley M. Cornwell, Esq.

Ashley M. Cornwell, Esq. is a Florida-licensed attorney and the author of When the Gavel Drops — an educational blog covering litigation strategy, appellate analysis, Florida law, and career development for attorneys, law students, and the legally curious.

She earned her B.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Oklahoma in 2019 and her Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad College of Law in 2024. She was admitted to the Florida Bar in April 2025 (Bar No. 1065235) and is a member of both the American Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association.

Before founding her own practice, Ashley gained experience working alongside criminal defense, appellate, and civil attorneys — contributing to complex legal matters, assisting with state prison resentencing reform efforts in California, and developing a sharp foundation in legal research, case strategy, and courtroom preparation.

About this blog

Many of the articles on this site begin as personal research projects — questions that arise while studying a case, developing litigation strategy, or analyzing how a legal doctrine evolves in practice. Rather than keeping those notes private, this blog brings that process into the open. Some articles are written for attorneys and legal professionals interested in litigation strategy, motion practice, and appellate analysis. Others are written to help clients and the public understand legal issues that may affect them directly. Both audiences will find content here — the topic and tone of each post makes the intended reader clear.
